Health Education England and the GPNRO are working closely with NHS England to support the delivery of the International GP Recruitment Programme.
Induction and Refresher Scheme or International GP Recruitment Programme?
The GP Induction and Refresher (I&R) Scheme is designed to provide a safe, supported and direct route for qualified GPs to join or return to NHS general practice in England.
Once you have joined the scheme, GPs undertake a number of assessments followed by a supervised placement in a practice in England.
The International GP Recruitment Programme (IGPR) builds on the support provided under the I&R Scheme by offering a more structured training programme allowing GPs to prepare for the I&R Scheme and its assessments. This includes language, communications and clinical skills training and an opportunity to observe and learn within a practice before commencing the I&R Scheme.
International GPs that have never practised in England before have the option of applying for either direct entry to the I&R Scheme or for the more comprehensive training provided under the IGPR Programme.
Factors you may wish to consider when deciding which route would be best for you include your level of English language skills and whether you have previous experience of living and working in an English speaking country.
If you feel that you would benefit from a longer training and induction programme then the IGPR Programme may be the best route for you.
Whichever of the routes you choose, NHS England now offers an attractive relocation package and help with other costs such as indemnity and registration fees.
If you are unsure which route would be best for you, NHS England is happy to arrange an informal chat with one of its medical directors to discuss your options. This can be arranged by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org
